Words 'diabetes type 2' appearing behind torn blue paper. White pills and male hand. Beaut

Hello

I'm Marianne

I love, parent, write, eat, cook, garden, work and breathe.  Often in that order.

I am over fifty and work full-time as a lawyer.  If, like me, you do not accept that decrepitude and ill health are an inevitable part of ageing, this website is for you.

For nearly 20 years, I have been living with type 2 diabetes and a conviction that bananas are merely vehicles for the proliferation of Brazilian Wandering Spiders, masquerading as fruit.*

My wonderful cousin Waleed has helped me move from simply living with the struggle to manage blood sugars (often in denial) to thriving.  Here is where I share what he has taught me and what I keep learning through my own research.

I write from the perspective of someone who has to keep trying to do what I know is good for me, when being human keeps getting in the way.  It is, for me, a daily renewal of the commitment to make an effort to take care of myself.  I don't always succeed and menopause has made it even harder, so I decided to make a space where I can see all I've learned and remind myself of the things that matter.  This is it.

Maintaining this website is, therefore, as much about helping myself stay on track as it is about hoping something might inspire you.  You don't have to have diabetes to explore how to take care of your body and mind better.  Not perfectly, just better.

All information is free: it's just recipes, information on nutrition and my blog: ‘A Measured Life’.  I'd invite you to sign up to receive blog posts as I publish them, but that would mean having to comply with data protection regulations and â€‹I'd rather set my own hair on fire than do that.

At some point, I may also share on social media.  For now, that's too much effort.

I'll keep adding to the site as opportunities arise.  In the meantime, thank you for spending time here.  I really do hope it helps you and those you love.

* The bananas.  Not the spiders.

THIS IS GOOD

Some important stuff

I am not a doctor, scientist, therapist, nurse, nutritionist, physiotherapist nor any other qualified medical expert.

To my dismay, I am also not Miss Piggy.*  â€‹

Whoever you are and whatever your health profile, please consult your doctor before doing anything that could affect your health.

Exercise is clearly a very important part of staying well, especially for ageing diabetics.  Although my blog posts will talk about exercise, the focus is more on what we ingest and how we live, think and feel.  Motion helps us regulate everything, including mood, so please do pursue exercise according to your health profile and with the right supervision.

I check the information I share through a range of sources, including doctors and academic publications.  Please remember that this is a hobby for me.  Nothing on this site constitutes advice you should follow without medical supervision.  If you are concerned about the accuracy of anything or how it applies to you, please consult a doctor.

*  I am, though, reliably informed by someone who finds it not so easy being green that there are days when the distinction is decidedly blurred.
